I've heard a lot of yapping about climate change and yada yada - and yes of course the condition of our world affects all of us. That's kind of a no-brainer.
When it comes right down to it, the climate of Earth has been changing from the get-go, fr whatever reasons.
I'm a bit on a kick here about developing and using wind, water, and solar resources ASAP - not because I have anything against oil, mind you - it's because it only makes sense. At least to me.
So when I found this one little clip of Attenborough saying something sensible, I snagged it.
Hopefully sooner rather than later the nations of our world will at long last begin to pay some attention.
Our oil resources have come in right handy, I have to say, and will continue to do their job no doubt for some time to come. That does not absolve us from the responsibility for replacing them as an energy source as quick as we can.
For those who fret about losing economically if the oil becomes outdated - I'd guess there's not much to worry about on that front.
Where there's room for oil wells and grasshoppers there's room for wind turbines and solar collectors.
Plus, you know, the sun and wind are everywhere (which oil is not) and there are lots of water sources.
Harness the sun, water, and wind. Put them to use.
One of my favorite places on the face of this earth has been dying of dehydration (Arkansas River Valley in Colorado) without the irrigation that made the farms there so incredible.
Give them back their farms.
Wind farms.
Sun farms.
Give the Valley something to market again.
While you're at it, take a look around at other areas that could use a financial boost - do the same thing there.
Every single Small Town USA ought to be providing its own energy needs; there's no reason in this world why they can't. Surplus goes on down the line to bigger towns and cities who don't have the necessary space. A bit of an economic boost for rural areas can't possibly be a bad idea. A few more local jobs wouldn't hurt a darned thing. Revenue from possible surplus could make things better for schools, for example - or whatever the towns want to do with it.
If the big oil companies don't want to lose their edge, they can take the lead in getting this stuff off the ground ... well, out of the air ... and the rivers, etc.
I honestly do not know why this has to be such a great big honkin' deal, you know that?
If I could follow my dream, I'd have me a little bitty cabin way out in the country with a windmill to bring water up from below and to harvest the wind for my few *power* needs.
Until somebody who can gets off of their backside and comes up with an alternative fuel vehicle I can afford, yes I would have to have a gas-powered vehicle (or a horse and wagon I suppose) for going to town once in a great while. Or I could walk, although twenty or thirty miles is a stretch for a little old gramma lady like me. Even a bicycle would take me a good long while.
Be that as it may be, and my own little dream aside for the moment, it would do the world a world of good to begin NOW to expand on what has already been started.
It's not like there's a shortage of power sources in our world, you know.
I tell ya.
If a little old gramma lady who lives in a tumble-down cottage on Main Street of Small Town USA can figure this stuff out, surely the smart people in our world can.
Think of all the construction and transportation jobs, not to mention the tech jobs of keeping things running. Not to mention the administrative jobs. Not to mention the upkeep jobs. Not to mention the accountants. Not to mention the planners, designers, developers ... not to mention all the stuff I can't even think of.
We need a good solid positive BREAK here, people.
Something to focus on besides all the crap in the world.
Okay, end of lecture.
Ha.
Gotcha!
One more thing: just because I've stopped yapping about this for the time being does not mean I'm not going to keep coming back around to it. And it also does not mean that you should now yawn hugely and go back to sleep.
Ask around.
Talk to people you know.
Somebody knows somebody who knows how to get this ball rolling.
Think about your own Small Town, your own farm, your own ranch, your own bigger town, your own city ... just think about it.
Unless you really think it's a great idea for the world to be dependent on a region of said world that's been notorious for several millenniums that we know of for being unstable and kind of grouchy about stuff. Why that should be when there's lots of oil in lots of other places, I have no idea.
Oh yeah (this is the last thing, I promise) while we're using oil to help us get the solar, wind, and water power sources developed, we should be using our own resources.
Okay, now I'm done.
