Danann and Sidhelagh of Dunnottar
Born Spirit-Twins, they are inseparable from birth – until they make an irrevocable Choice. Yet their love endures, no matter what.
From They Are My Song:
Mamm has raised these two from birth. And they're about to break the heart of her. But they have a lesson to learn ... the hard way.
Mamm has raised these two from birth. And they're about to break the heart of her. But they have a lesson to learn ... the hard way.
... As Danann and Sidhelagh approach the door to their house, Mamm’s quiet voice from behind stops them.
The night is clear and bright.
They carry no torch but Mamm’s face is clear to them.
It would be clearly in their vision even if the night had been one of pitch black darkness.
The plea in her eyes does not need voicing.
Sidhelagh and Danann know what she is asking of them.
She knows what they will choose.
The love of the three of them is strong and long-lived. It is as constant as the sea, the stones, and the sky - and has been part of all of them for longer than they can remember.
They know one another.
Without speaking a word they embrace and Mamm feels the tears of Danann and Sidhelagh.
On the skin of her face she feels the tears of Danann and Sidhelagh.
In the depths of the soul of her she feels the tears of Danann and Sidhelagh.
Through the spirit of her life she feels the tears of Danann and Sidhelagh on this night as they bid her a blessed rest.
Mamm leaves them and goes into her own little house.
Danann and Sidhelagh hold to one another now.
The tears of Danann and Sidhelagh merge together now.
The tears of Danann and Sidhelagh run together down their faces, pressed together now.
It is not too late.
They can still change their mind.
This they know.
They will not change their mind.
This they know too.
They do not speak.
There is nothing to be said at this time.
Sidhelagh still wears her white hooded cloak.
Danann takes his from its peg and slips it on over his dress whites.
All others are sleeping now.
Although usually nobody thinks much about it, Danann and Sidhelagh ARE Sidhe. They know that all the others, save Mamm, are sleeping now.
Mamm will not sleep on this night.
Neither will she interfere.
Sidhelagh and Danann have chosen. Mamm cannot say them nay.
In the days since the Trade time Danann and Sidhelagh have spent time together in their minds as well as in person.
This too is a Sidhe thing that nobody ever thinks much of because they don’t make an issue of it.
The internal discipline required to block minds is enforced from infancy on – and it’s been a very long time since Sidhelagh and Danann were first infants. For all of that time they have never blocked one another’s minds. In the entire wide world the two of them only have full access to one another’s thoughts.
So no, there is no need to verbalize anything between them, although they most generally do anyway; it has become a habit.
In the days since the Trade time their thoughts have focused on the news brought by the traders from afar.
The whole group has been disturbed by that news and there have been many discussions regarding what it might mean for them all.
Ideas range from going into hiding to taking the battle to Rome itself.
No conclusions have been reached, nor do any expect that any conclusions CAN be reached.
Mamm quietly and gently reminds them all that the Mother is quite safely in control of Her own future and tells them to quit fretting about it – but still the discussions go on and on and on, all feeling on edge and undecided about the whole thing.
They’re all remembering that day of un-ease, and Mamm’s scream in the night.
They’re all thinking about the events that have come to pass since that time, wondering which, if any, was what the message was about, or if it is still to come.
On this night Sidhelagh and Danann will try to do something that might help.
In the days since the Trade time they have spent countless hours in silence.
They have asked the Mother for guidance time and time and time again but receive no guidance from Her on this.
This must be their choice.
This they know.
And so they have chosen.
What they will do is forbidden to them.
This they know.
Their fears, their apprehensions, their wish to be DOING, their desire to stop what is coming, their desperation to protect the Mother and their people – all of these and more have brought them to this choice.
That there will be repercussions they fully expect and accept.
It is a price they will pay gladly if by their action they can help the Mother and their people.
And so Danann and Sidhelagh go cloaked to the grove where the fire is long out and the ashes grown cold already in the chill of this night.
No night birds cheep on this night.
No sea breeze riffles the leaves of the oaks on this night.
Danann and Sidhelagh risk all in an attempt to bring help to
their threatened people, whom they love almost beyond human
comprehension.
The price they pay is severe; their Atonement will tear them
apart.
Yet the two of them share a a love which knows no bundaries.
Such a love will endure ... no matter what.
The price they pay is severe; their Atonement will tear them
apart.
Yet the two of them share a a love which knows no bundaries.
Such a love will endure ... no matter what.
