MELODY OF PHI ... COMING RIGHT UP ... THE QUEST BEGINS

For now I'm just pleased as punch to have gotten myself a little toy keyboard ... what I wouldn't give to have that old piano back that I had so very long ago!

Even so, just getting the melody planted into my head, at least the order of the notes, is a step in the right direction.

It's been a long time since I've done anything musical (it's not my forte) except sing along when there's a song playing that I know and like, so it's a change of pace for me. Will I even remember full, half, quarter, eighth notes? Hopefully it will all come back to me as I go along.

At any rate, lest I lose my train of thought, and the sequence of the notes, here are the introductory 'notes' of PHI, with 1 being middle C just because it's easiest for me ... they're also arranged, for the moment, into sets of four, for the same reason.

1618
0339 8874
9894
8482 0458
6834

3656 3811

*laughing*

I found a site and copied the sequence as far as said site took it - 37 pages solid of random numbers, barely a drop in the bucket of the infinity of PHI.

I'll be doing good just to get these first 36 memorized, along with the notes I've assigned to them.

Then will come the fun part - arranging them in a melody with variations in tempo and note lengths and all that stuff I don't have the right language for but will recognize the combination/s when I hear it/them.

Trust me on that.

Rather, trust our Characters because this after all THEIR SONG. They might be MY song, but even that isn't a given as the Mother has first claim always. Either way, the Song of PHI is the Song of our Characters, and of our world  when it comes right down to it.

My sister reminded me that according to archaeological and historic records the musical instruments of 'back in the day' would not have had our eight note musical scale ... but for our purposes that doesn't matter. For one thing it's fiction and our Characters are clever souls. Plus the only instrument we ever have involved in the Song is the Queen Harp whose strings can produce any sound she wants. And vocals have always had a huge range. So there you have it. The Song of Phi is timeless.

We're going to do our best to weave it into something that's hauntingly beautiful, and dangerous.

The only thing that's not negotiable is the order of the notes - because that's like the most immutable Law of our world.

For the rest, we shall see what we shall see.

For the SONG itself, the arrangement has to lend itself to being a repeated melody suitable for being sung in rounds by eight different Voices.

Mamm's Voice begins with her Song of Choice. She is a soprano.
Next comes Danann with the Spiral. He is a bass.
Sidhelagh Sings of Peace. Her Voice is second soprano.
Alianora and Drustann Sing of Faith - first soprano and tenor.
Sass Sings of Healing - she is a contralto. When Thann comes into the Story Line, he's a bass.
Caileen and Talorc Sing of Hope - alto and whatever's between tenor and bass.
Aine and Kalann sing of Love - they are second soprano and tenor.
Ullin of Iona Sings of Unity with the Queen Harp - his Voice is bass; hers is whatever she wants it to be.

So we've got all these Voices coming into the round as the SONG progresses.

That there are no words helps. All we have to do is make sure the notes don't clash.

AND we can range the Voices per part by octave. Mamm will go an octave above middle C while Danann will be an octave below. Hypothetically. Once I get my hands on a full piano keyboard I can at least do some fiddling and see if it's going to even be possible. Because the notes repeat randomly, it might be *difficult* to find a place for the Voices to come into the melody without causing discord.

Ah well.

The quest is on for a Theme Song for SONG.

Since I'm In 'Artist' Mode ... Uffda ...

Over a year ago my sister suggested I try a painting that would look something like the one in the post this LINK will take you to.

Well, what with one thing and another, it completely flew out of my mind ... until recently.

I've been looking on line at relevant photos, found some rather impressive ones of both outer space and geologic formations that would be awesome to use.

I'm NOT going to even try to shoot for anything even close to the photo created by the person who created the beauty you'll see in the photo the link will take you to, and have serious doubts whether or not I'll be able to even come close to getting the general concept put together, but the thought intrigues me so I'll likely give it a try anyway. We shall see what we shall see when the time comes.

If you click on the link, you'll read that I thought 'PHI in the Sky!' when I saw the photo - that's because in HELL AND HIGH WATER (it's fiction, in case you're not familiar with the SONG series) there are references to relatives back in the far ancient days (think mammoth and saber cat) who went 'Hiving' in the stars, up there out there, before the advanced civilization of Phi got wiped out by the Extinction Level Event which triggered what we call the Younger Dryas. It took the mammoth, the saber cat, and many other species, that ELE did, and it annihilated a mighty big hunk of Earth in general.

Some of our Characters are separated from family members when they are caught on Earth away from those who are up there out there among the stars. Communications, let alone access, between Earth and the Star Folk are severed irreparably, one more loss to bear when the ELE and its aftereffects are already too much for people to cope with.

At any rate, I have no idea if I'll ever be able to portray what one of the 'hives' of the Star Folk might have looked like, but it's going to be fun just going through the photos of the Universe, and whatever I can find that might be used to represent the settlements up there out there. They're not going to be Space Station things, though. That much I can tell you!

I'm daunted, and I don't daunt easy.

Still gonna be fun though!! Pop that image, or one along the same lines, up to a four foot by six foot canvas and see what you think ... me, I'm thinking 'Challenge!' and I'm thinking 'Oh boy what am I getting myself into?' and I'm thinking 'My sister is either a genius or she hates me.' She wants it in high relief sculpted form no less.

Uffda.

How about I just paint one and display it on a frame at a 45 degree angle or some such?

Heh.

I can make it the cover of a big triangular box and store stuff in there. It'll have to go out in my lean-to since this little house I'm living in now ain't got space for no such thing.

Lord have mercy.

Like I don't have enough to do. I'm supposed to be rewriting the first book of SONG, making new book covers, concocting trailers, updating ALL of the books, yada yada and MORE yada. Do I have time to ding around with a huge painting? Well, maybe. Procrastination is my middle name. One of my middle names. I'm going to try to shoot for Spring Equinox to have this stuff all done, but it's not like there's any real 'deadline' for which I'm eternally grateful. Summer Solstice would be just as good a time, right?

I'll say it again, with emphasis.

UFFDA!

'Shifting For Ourselves'

Having to work holidays doesn't necessarily mean we can't have our own sort of celebration.

New Year's Day of 2016 sees the swing shift 'Shifting for Ourselves' and having a blast with it.

We're having a pot luck meal, but initial reports indicate it might not be what a person would expect.

Here's a list of what we've got on the menu so far, with much more we won't know until the last minute.

Lasagna,
French bread,
deviled eggs,
scalloped potatoes and ham,
knoephle-kraut-sausage combo,
banana muffins,
fresh veggie mix,
black-eyed peas with bacon,
romaine with lemon,
cinnamon cider with whipped cream and nutmeg dash,
sea-salted caramel bits,
whole wheat dinner rolls,
dill pickles,
chilled shrimp with cocktail sauce dip or lemon wedges,
DOT's pretzels (as opposed to the ordinary kind)

 … for starters …

There are sixteen of us, eight on each of our Units, when fully staffed (which we sometimes are) which gives us a starting point for knowing how much to make/bring of our various contributions. We've also invited some family members as well as some of our co-shifters who aren't scheduled.

Our supper breaks are between six and seven p.m. with two half-hour slots - about half of us taking the first half hour and the rest taking the second which gives us our timing.

We also, if we can fit them in, have a couple of fifteen minute breaks, one between four and four-thirty and the other if/when we find time around nine which gives us set-up and tear-down time.

So each of us will be bringing whatever we choose (accumulating it in the staff refrigerator for a few days ahead of time when possible) and each of us has fifteen minutes to help with the setting up, thirty minutes to eat as we visit, then fifteen minutes later in the shift to get everything cleared up.

When somebody asks if everyone's invited, from the other shifts and departments, the answer is no. We can shift for ourselves, get the set-up and eating and clean-up done for ourselves, but no we do not have the resources to cover everybody. Nor would it be anything like a good idea to have more than five times our own numbers trying to cram into a space (and time-span) that will accommodate half us at a time in relative comfort but not many more than that.

So we say if day shift, med floor, night shift, and departments want to have their own New Year's Day celebrations, they should have at it. Of course a lot of them don't have to work holidays anyway and we aren't overly concerned about those folk. The rest have exactly the same resources that we do.

This is our own way of taking care of our own selves. We're making the most of what little time, space, and personal resources we've got, fitting our celebration in between the priority of our work requirements. And it must be said that our people have noticed and appreciated our good spirits in the days approaching said celebration. The anticipation and planning gives us a head start on the fun!

Our shift leaders have indeed taken the lead here, sharing their idea with us and being the first to kick in their contributions. We as a team have been more than happy to make this a creatively festive celebration.

We might not have much to work with, but we can by golly get a heck of a lot done in our bits of break time without making a big deal out of it (although it really is kind of a big deal) and without interrupting the flow of our shift or interfering with the care of our people.

One thing I've noticed is that our choices of contributions fit pretty darned well with our work setting - a health care facility. There aren't many (any) junk food types of things represented, not many carbs, lots of healthy and tasty stuff though!

We do ourselves proud.

It's a great way to begin a new year!

Well well ... 'INFJ' giving way to 'INFP' ... good news for me ... from my perspective ...

The book that 'changed' me.

The personality type 'test results' you'll find below are From HERE

This is the first time this test has resulted in the 'P' being so strong, edging 'J' almost completely out of the picture. The I, N, and F have always consistently been way high in percentiles with J being less extreme, then edging into P ... and now ... what the heck!

I'm glad to see these popping up in people's social media feeds. There are a variety of free 'MBTI tests' on line - they're all pretty darned accurate and consistent - and surprisingly USEFUL.

Knowing, being able to get a handle on, your own personal style, gives you insights about yourself that you may not have thought about much, or at all for that matter. At least that's how it's been for me. We all are simply a we are, as a general rule. Yet that 'J' always bothered me a little about myself, which the tests have consistently shown over the years ... it was always sort of borderline.

So, curious me, I'm wondering what has 'changed' in the past couple of years, with that 'J' edging closer to the 'P' end of the scale. Aren't our 'personalities' supposed to be basically cast in concrete? How come mine seems to be changing?

When I stop and analyze it, look at it from where I'm at now, the answer stares me in the face.

I've made some changes in my life, my lifestyle, and my general outlook.

It was a couple of years ago (2013) that I dropped down to part time at my shift-work job, to begin with. Right about then is when some of my artwork also 'went public' for the first time, not an easy choice and fraught with both anxiety and the antithesis of that anxiety (let them think what they will; until they see it they can't think anything at all, right?). It was a good move as it turned out, and gave me the confidence and determination to follow through on a project that came into my mind at just exactly that time.

And so the Mamm Books happened because I had the time and the energy (from dropping to a more reasonable shift-work schedule) and because the art project morphed into the writing of books.

Last summer (2014) brought another change - a too-long-delayed trip HOME home for me, time off from shift-work, and a further drop in hours there in order to at long last achieve a predictable schedule that I could plan an actual LIFE around.

Yes it was incredibly expensive ... but quite very necessary. The path I had been on, and at the time not having the internal resources with which to walk such a path without paying an enormous internal price, was taking a dangerous toll. I needed the time I took - to heal and to strengthen both physically and emotionally. In my condition, brought on by my own choice to stick with it no matter what, the struggle almost did me in. It was either give myself a break and a chance or spend at least the equivalent (of the income I was giving up) on therapy and pharmaceuticals I have NO desire to put into my systems.

Until I had been HOME home (the CO Rockies and down in the Arkansas River Valley) for a while and started to feel more and more like my own self, I'd had no real idea of the extent of damage I had been doing to myself.

At any rate, those are the 'changes' that have happened in the past couple of years which are now showing up in the MBTI testing process.

Not only have I given myself permission to not be so VERY strait-laced, I've also done a LOT of research.

*laughing*

I've also 'met' some Characters who don't always follow the straight and narrow path I plan for them in plot lines.

Writing Mamm of Dunnottar, I realized that Mamm needed a husband if the rest of the books (already written and published!) were going to 'happen'. He had to be from her time, he had to be strong enough to handle Mamm, and he had to have the same values as the rest of the Characters.

Alaric dropped into my lap from out of the clear blue sky when I skeptically took a 'Which Conqueror Are You?' quiz on line. I'm not exactly 'Conqueror' material and wondered what the heck they were going to be able to come up with for me, the most peaceful and non-competitive person I know. What on earth could I have in common with the Conquerors of our world? I didn't WANT to have anything in common with any of them, to be honest.

Then I met Alaric. And said to myself, 'This is Mamm's mate.'

Little did I know what I was getting myself into. It was akin to finally finding Dunnottar, a fleeting vision from years ago that I kind of assumed wasn't really REAL but turned out to be quite very REAL. Same thing with Alaric. He fit EXACTLY into Mamm's lifespan. Research confirmed that he would indeed be a good match for Mamm, who wasn't about to marry just anybody.

At first I was tickled pink. Then I realized that this was an actual historic figure here, not totally fictional like the rest of them. I would have to follow the real events of his recorded life.

Oh my.

Alaric sacked Rome in 410 CE.

How to reconcile that with the peacefulness of our Characters?

Well, they'd already had to fight more than one battle, were formidable Warriors ... it would be okay ...

And so it was.

Alaric did sack Rome, but all things considered he wasn't mean about it. They opened the gates to him for cryin' out loud - how mean does that sound?

Anyway, the combination of having to stick to an actual course of events while at the same time putting said course into an already existing fictional framework had the effect (in retrospect) of making me figure out how to do it.

Yep.

Then, after I had that whole half of the book's dual story line written, I happened across references to Ataulf that I hadn't paid enough attention to before.

OOPS.

Had to go back and write him into the story line.

Okay, Ataulf's in there, Mamm's brother who picked up where Alaric left off. We're good to go NOW!

No.

No?

No.

Mamm had to have ANOTHER brother, Waleis.

WHAT!?!

Are you KIDDING me?

She's already got two much older brothers (besides Ataulf) - one in Albann (Scotland) up in Chattan territory and one in Tarnos of Gaul. Her parents have bloody well LEFT FOR THE FAR WESTERN LANDS and aren't going to come back. Where is this younger brother going to come from, the one who has to take over in Aquitaine after Ataulf gets murdered? The one who later spawns legends as Walther in the Germanic lands? What the heck.

So I had to write in Wally of the West and get him from what would come to be recognized as North America back to the UK and Europe.

Good Lord.

So yeah, it MADE me HAVE to take myself out of what had become my comfort zone and use the more 'organized' part of my brain because I HAD to get the sequences right - I couldn't just use vague references or flat out make stuff up (although as it turns out what I thought I was 'making up' was not exactly as 'made up' as I thought, but I wrote a whole other book about THAT and am NOT going to elaborate here). Alaric, Ataulf, 'Wally', Stilicho, the Emperors East and West, the battles, the 'situation' of the times ... all are real documented history. Being INFJ (at the time) with that INFP starting to come to the fore, I could not, would not, ignore reality completely just because I happened to be writing fiction.

And this whole long spiel is simply to illustrate how in the world one's 'cast in concrete' personality type can 'change'. It's not so hard to 'get' how the J & P blend - they have to. I had to 'go with the flow' to write in unexpected Characters after the fact, not to mention coping with the stuff the different Characters pulled on me when I thought I had their roles all cut and dried. I also, at the same time, had to follow a darned strict timeline - and get the book done and out when it was supposed to be done and out.

Then the Younglings took the bit in their collective mouth.

Then DANANN, in response to the Hogmanay celebration at Stonehaven and the Fireballs, blew *my* book timeline out of the water and dragged the lot of us ahead with him three thousand years.

To top it off, I suspect J and P in collusion with I, N, and F as being behind my total conviction that Science and God are totally compatible and are in fact one and the same. Linear Logic and Mystic Magic are NOT mutually exclusive, folks. The more we learn the more mystified we become about the stuff we don't know yet, and the more determined we become to keep on searching, only to be baffled by what we find - so we search even harder for both the biggest and the smallest ... and 'round and 'round we go - following PHI because the Spiral is what we have to go by.

And BadaBingBadaBoom as Brooklyn Bill would say.

No wonder my head is spinning and it's a relief to be back full time at that shift-work job.

I kid you not. It's kind of like being on vacation, even though it's really hard work and directly related to having specific goals. Again, the J and the P are 'taking turns' - or something ... At least the INF is absolutely stable and unchanging, thank God. Those three aren't going anywhere. They're still riding at or near the 100% markers. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

INFP

You are an idealist. You are loyal to your values and the people who are important to you. You hope you can live in a world which could exactly match your own values. You are very curious about the world. You can always find more possibilities and drive yourself and other people to make these ideas come true. You try to understand other people and help them to maximize their potential. When there is nothing threatening your own values, you are quite flexible and good at accepting other people.

Introversion I or Extroversion E - You can get your energy from where you focus your attention.
You are Introverted Tendency, that is concerned about how the changes of the outer environment influence yourself: concentrate your psychological forces and attention on your inner world, and focus on your inner experience, thinking, idea and emotion. You prefer to think independently and read.
People different from you are Extroverted Tendency, that concerned about how you influence the outer environment: concentrating your psychological forces and attention on the outer world and communication with other people and like meeting, discussion and chatting.

Sensation S or Intuition N - What will you notice more when you receive and perceive the information from the surrounding world.
You are iNtuition Tendency, that likes abstract theories and principles. You are concerned with the entirety of things and the tendency of change and development. You are concerned about inspiration, imagination and creativity. You like implication, analogy, connections, possibility, inference and prediction.
People different from you are Sensing Tendency, that are concerned about the detailed information gained through sense perception: things that you see, hear, smell, taste and touch. You notice details and descriptions more. You like to use and develop the skills you already have.

Thinking T Or Feeling F - How do you make decisions.
You are Feeling Tendency, that attaches the most importance to the feelings of yourself and other people. The value and harmony will be your standard for evaluation. You are very sympathetic, kind, friendly and considerate. You always think about how your behavior will effect the feelings of other people.
People different from you are Thinking Tendency, that pay attention on the logic relationships among things. You like to evaluate and make decisions through objective analysis. You are very rational, objective and fair. You think principles are more important than being flexible.

Judging J or Perceiving P - How do you organize and design life.
You are Perceiving Tendency, that needs to collect more information before you make a decision. So you try to understand and adapt. You focus on process and change your goals based on the information changes. You always allow for unforeseen circumstances in your daily life. You like a loose and free life style, which may be bit disordered.
People different from you are Judging Tendency, that like to make judgements and decision. You like to make plans and would like to manage, control and drive for the results. You focus on accomplishing the task. In your daily life, you hope your life is organized, step by step and respect the timeline.

 Yep.

That's my analysis for the time being.

DIY Work Boots for CNA Shifts

Eight hours of walking/trotting on concrete will give your feet a pounding case of foot-ache. I can't afford to buy expensive shoes that never seem to be able to stand up to the pounding they get for more than a few months at the most.

So I decided maybe I ought to take a shot at creating my own.

Over the course of the past year or so I've made pairs of boots out of felted wool (an old coat) so I know I can do it. The problem in this case is having a sole that will protect my feet and legs. The ones I've made have really soft soles of the same felted wool. They're great and I love them, but I know for a fact that they'd never ever be comfortable for long at my CNA shift-work job.

A friend of mine made me a couple of pairs of 'boots' for me to use with my Character Wardrobes - she used 100% wool yarn, knitted big tubes (stitched the big knitted rectangles into tubes that is, with one end closed), washed them on hot setting, dried them on hot setting (checking periodically for size), and handed them over to me. I made insoles out of layers cut from an old wool blanket (felted again) and have never in my life had happier feet. They're about worn out, the boots I made from the felted wool 'tubes' my friend made, but they're going to get put to use again.

As a first experiment I cut foot-shaped soles out of some scrap floor padding that had been used for a gymnastics program, just a little bigger than my own foot. These I put into the boot tubes in place of the old felted wool blanket insoles.

Tonight I took along to work the mock-ups of the work shoes/boots I want to try ... and my feet/legs never hurt at all once I put them on! So that's one idea that was worth trying.

Tomorrow I'm taking it a step further.

I have a pair of old flip-flops with thick soles that I have a hundred thousand times wished I could wear to work, or that they made shoes with such soles.

In the photo above you can see how deep those soles are, and that I've clipped the toe straps out of them. They're also significantly too big for me but they still fit into the boot tubes! And, since I've been wearing them for years on end, obviously they're not too big for me to walk in.

At this point I could not possibly care less how big my feet look, or how strange. I want to be able to work a full shift without hurting. The size of these will allow me to also put in layers of felted wool under my feet if I want to. Since it's all experimental, I'm going to go without the extra wool for tomorrow's shift, see how well it works with just the soles of the flip-flops.

Above, you can see the top and side views with the tops of the boots up instead of folded down. The ankle straps are sleeve cuffs from a leather jacket that I cut up to use for another project. They work great for both the initial shaping of the tube (get the tube a little damp, add the straps to hold the ankle part in place, and wear them until they're dry - they mold to your foot; in this case it's the flip-flop sole I want them to mold to) and for holding the boots firmly in place as you wear them. Any kind of fastening would do - I could use strips of fabric, too.

Now, what I'm hoping for is that the 'breathing' trait of the felted wool will work to keep my feet comfortable (no sweating but plenty warm) and the bigger size of the flip-flops will give my toes plenty of wiggle room (something that seems to be sadly missing in most shoes). I'm pretty sure I'm going to want to: add the felted wool insole liners, or (since I don't care how big my feet look) wear as 'socks' the form-fitting boots I made before out of that old felted wool coat, or ... I dunno ... come up with some felted wool 'booties' to wear.

I'll no doubt end up making myself some variation of little slipper liners as the cutouts tend to follow my foot action and wind up getting pushed where they do me the least amount of good. I tried just putting a couple of layers of felted wool into my regular work shoes - it helped a lot, believe me - but they work their way back and toward the inside as I tend to toe-walk when I'm in a hurry (which is all the time on this job!) and most of the time I walk more on the outsides of my feet than the insides or dead center, don't ask me why. So slipper liners will help. I don't want to glue the liners in place because I'll go through a lot of them.

As for the outer soles ... right now I don't have any. Here's what keeps me from slipping and sliding on woolen 'soles' while I'm working out the design of these work boots.

Yup. Duct tape. You can see where the seam gave way in this tube from my wearing these boots so much. It's that gappy looking place down the center of the bottom of the boot. Rather than restitch it I just left it and taped over it. It's holding just fine so far but is not a perfect solution. Gives me a bit of extra space to work with, room for the soles to go in (although the felted wool stretches some, too).

When I get done playing with these, I'll ask my friend to make me another pair of tubes, cut and stitch to shape the toe the way I want it (felted wool does not fray!), get the soles put in, and dip the bottoms of them in liquid rubber (and up the sides of the 'shoe' part to about the height of the inside soles). That will keep them from getting soggy if I walk in wet snow or dew or rain-wet grass. It will also give me a good no-slip outer sole. I hope. If not, I'll go back to using duct tape and just keep my feet out of wet snow and such.

I do love wool.

Even if my feet do get wet in these things in the dead of winter, they aren't going to freeze. Again, I'm not exactly sure why that is but apparently it's true. They'd get cold, but not frozen. Haven't had to test it out and don't intend to, but it's reassuring nonetheless.

So ... hopefully I'll come up with a way to keep my feet and legs comfortable while I work.

LittleEthan told Alaric, 'You will do what you have to do when you have to do it, but you don't have to do it hungry,' when Alaric objected to accepting help for his people.

So now I tell myself, 'You will do what you have to do when you have to do it, but you don't have to do it with your feet and legs hurting.'

Nobody's offering me a kindgom's ransom - but perhaps I've been given something better: a creative mind that can imagine a way to 'fix' a problem, and the chutzpah to give it a try. And another try, and another, and another ... until something works.

A Man and a Dream ... Help This One Follow His ...

How I wish I could do something, anything to help this young man get to where he's going!!

This LINK will take you to information about him and his dream. Meanwhile, here's a bit from the Mearns Leader ...

07:00 Friday 24 July 2015

A Stonehaven music student is close to securing his dream of attending prestigious New York university NYU Steinhardt.

Ben McMillan (28) has been awarded the Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Scholarship Fund to study in America on completion of his Masters in Vocal Composition course at the University of Aberdeen.

He has set his sights on a career as a film composer and was accepted onto the Masters in Film Composition and Music Technology at NYU Steinhardt, a specialist institution which has produced alumni including Disney’s most prolific composer Alan Menken, who has worked on films including The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, and the composer and producer Mark Ronson.

The scholarship covers Ben’s first year of tuition, however he is now faced with the task of raising the remaining funds needed to pay for his accommodation and living costs.

His family have rallied round, and with the aid of his brothers, he has organised a fundraising ceilidh in Stonehaven Town Hall, to take place on Saturday August 7.
...

For those who may not know what a 'ceilidh' is ... here's the dictionary definition:  a party with music, dancing, and often storytelling ... and it's pronounced 'KAY lee' ... if I'm wrong somebody please set it right ...

This is one event I would DEARLY love to attend; alas I cannot, but would like for Ben to know that I'll be thinking of him and his Dream, not only on August 7th but as he makes his way along his path.

'Go with the protection and blessing of the Holy Trinity - wherever you travel - in safety and in joy!'

God bless you and keep you, Ben. Follow your heart and your dream, wherever they lead you.

Emergency Back-up !!

Look what I found!

These are ... yes, you guessed it ... marbles. And some old copper wire.  I'm going to use them to make some of these:

This is an emergency back-up marble.

Just lately I've been asked a number of times in a number of settings about the one I myself wear all the time.

'Is it a crystal? Does it have a special meaning?'

'It's a marble,' I say.

'A marble?'

'Yep.'

'Why are you wearing a marble?'

'In case someone tells me I must have lost all my marbles, I can show them this one.'

'Oh.'

'And there have been times I've wondered my own self if I've lost all my marbles. This proves that no I haven't.'

'I want one!'

So I dug around and found the old thin copper wire.

'Did you make me a marble pendant?'

'Umm. No, not yet. But I found the wire! Now I just have to find the marbles.'

'Good thing you wear that one around your neck, huh?'

'Yep.'

Well, I'll have you know I found the marbles!

Now I can get busy and make some pendants for those who don't want to ever have to worry about losing all of theirs.

Since it looks like I won't be able to mow my yard tomorrow after all, what with a bit of a thunderstorm in the forecast, it might be a good day to spend in one of the shelters at the park, writing fun little stories and wrapping marbles in copper wire. That way I can be 'outside' but won't get soaked when it rains!

Small Town USA has a mighty fine park, I have to say - and I don't spend enough time there. So ... tomorrow (well, later this morning when I wake up, or noonish maybe since it's already past four o'clock in the morning) I'll take my marbles and my wire over there (a whole block and a half) and see if I can cage some of the marbles so that others can have peace of mind, knowing they've got at least one of their marbles safe and sound.

If I get really ambitious I'll take some photos as I go along, in case you'd like to cage one of your own marbles.  It's not really hard, as long as you keep a good hold on the marble you're trying to capture.

Joy - and Peace

When the world seems to have gone around the bend, when I look around me and know that there's so much I can't do, so much I don't have, so much that's wrong and I can't fix it ... it can get more than a little disheartening ...

On the other hand, lots of the time I end up looking around me, and inside of me for something, anything, to give me hope. Lo and behold, there's always something there. Maybe not much of something, but still ... enough to make something.

That, my friend, brings Joy, and it brings Peace.

There are things I can't do physically, intellectually, spiritually ... lots and lots of them. There are things I don't have the money to tend to the way I would like, lots and lots of them. There are things I don't own and never will. There are times I'm hungry or cold or miserable. There are people I don't see enough of, and people I may never get to see, and people I will never see again in this life. There are places, as with people, I don't see, may never see, won't see again ... There's stuff going on in our great green world that will turn our green to dark if we don't watch out.

And yet ... sometimes when I'm feeling the most down there will come to me a warm embrace, like a strong hug from Someone who loves me despite all. Here is Peace, I seem to hear. Make something of it.

And yet ... in the darkest of dark a tiny flicker will catch my eye for an instant only. What was that? Was it real? Where did it go? Oh, there it is again. Here is Hope, I seem to hear. Make its light stronger.

And yet ... into the depth of my utter loneliness will come a Voice, perhaps from a far distance, perhaps from near to hand, and I am blessed with an unexpected gift. Here is Friendship, I seem to hear. Let it in.

And yet ... and yet ... and yet ... all of the Circles of Dunnottar come one by one, turn and turn about to bring their gifts: Faith, Family, Friends, Freedom, the Future ... just when they are most needed. They didn't spring from my imagination; they've been gifting me, and you for that matter, all along.

So too the Voices of SONG: Choice, the Spiral, Peace, Faith, Healing, Hope, Love ... they aren't just parts of the fiction I write - they are parts of the books because they have been first parts of each and all of us.

I write because it is in me to do so - and out it must come whether I would will it or no. Perhaps there may be only one person in the entirety of this world for whom the words are meant; perhaps that one person is yet unborn. That is not for me to know. What is for me is to do - to do the best I can with what I have to work with at any given time.

When despair is but a heartbeat away ... I look around me, and inside of me, and make a Choice. To make something or to not make something out of what I find, no matter how small or insignificant.

And comes Joy, comes Peace ... and all the rest of it.

It doesn't necessarily have to be 'good enough' for the rest of the world. It has only to be the best I can do, and that's good enough.

WHOOP! Tomorrow Looks Good!

Starting right now I've got a whole bunch of days off!

I'm trying to be stern with myself about getting to sleep at a reasonable time, but as usual I'm not paying much attention to my own lectures.

A quick check of the forecast informs me that come afternoon it's going to be beautiful.

A walk through my yard on my way to the house after work tonight informs me that the grass hasn't gotten any shorter since the last day I got it mowed.

Put the two together and guess what's on my agenda for tomorrow afternoon.

Since the following couple of days look like inside projects, they look even better to me than tomorrow does - and the reason for that is that it means studio time for me!

There are some horses and ponies patiently waiting for my attention, and some riders anxious to be included.

Because, as a general rule, I tend to work on more than one project at a time I get to consult my list of possibilities and pick one or two others to break up my sketching and painting with sculpting or writing or sewing or twining wire or any of a dozen other options.

My suspicion is that the writing is the most likely candidate as the Younglings of Dunnottar are at the fore of my thoughts. They want to get on with their adventures but Merri and Dothann aren't even there yet - so first is going to be to write that book to go with the ones for Diann, Corrbed, and Rua. Then we can get on with the getting on!
