Impossible Is A Word One Should Use With Great Caution

Living where I do in a community of hardworking, straight thinking, conservative fundamentalist, easygoing, fun-loving, culturally consolidated folk …I am an oddball among the vast majority of the folk of this community. That they like me anyway says a lot for their tolerance level. Plus nobody wants me to write the sequel to Small Town USA because they know full well that it’s not all as rosy here as that book might make it seem.

So I take myself off into realms of the past and the future, leaving the present to fend for itself as best it can.

Which is where the word ‘impossible’ comes into play.

Yes I do write fiction but most of it is not ‘impossible’.

I could cite, chapter and verse, what humankind has done in the past thousand years to make my point. Even the last century, nay decade, would clarify things significantly to those who say ‘impossible’. Just about everything we’ve accomplished was once ‘impossible’ or even beyond anybody’s imaginations. Look it up. You’ll be impressed. We’ve been going great guns just lately.

Give us another couple of thousand years, like the many thousands of years our species had in which to develop in many different ways. Some focused on one thing, some on another. We’re not talking about a different species here, folks. We’re talking about us, humankind, with exactly the same bodies and brains that we have today. Exactly the same. If we can do it, so could they.

We’ve only had ten thousand years to recuperate from something that could have wiped us and everything else from the face of Earth. As the exact same people that we are today we’ve been around for say 200,000 years. All we have to do is look at our own recent history – the past decade, century, millennium – and if you’re still wondering if we could have ‘done this before’ you can stop now. If we can do it now we could have done it before.

Not only that, but an event like the one that happened twelve thousand years ago could happen again and there we would be. Do not pass Go do not collect two hundred dollars. All that genius and hard work down the drain – again.

What we’ve done in a decade, a century, a millennium, ten millennia … think on this for a minute: in our present form we’ve been here for 200,000 years, not 10,000 or 20,000. We haven’t changed a whit as a species in all that time. Are you going to tell me we’ve become smarter? We haven’t.

Earth changes over time; we haven’t. Earth periodically gets massive ice caps and we as a species live through them. Earth also has periods of warm times. We as a species live through them as well.

And our cultural development is markedly irregular. Look at the world in which we live in. People can’t live without their electronics. Ha. Plenty of people live without electronics. We call them ‘primitive’ or ‘underdeveloped’ or ‘backward’ or ‘uncivilized’ or any number of disparaging things. Yet they are identical in form and in brain function to us ‘privileged’ people. They live their lives just as we do, from one day to the next.

Now we’re going to play ‘What If’.

What if something drastic happened and all of our electronics went on the blink at the same time?

What if whatever happened back then happened again? How much of our ‘civilization’ would remain? Hmm? Great heat can melt stone. It can incinerate to ashes every last thing we’ve built in the course of the last ten thousand years. It can obliterate entire continents and all that dwell thereon. Vast amounts of moving water can and do erase and rearrange landscapes on a massive scale, pulverizing anything that gets in its way, just like it does in its frozen form only a lot faster. Don’t think it’s ever happened and couldn’t possibly happen again even if it did once?

See, this is how come most of our local folk look at me sideways a lot of the time. I write ‘What If’ stuff.

What if back in the day the curious folk, the intrepid folk, the folk who wanted to push that envelope … what if they, as in our own history if you recall, weren’t exactly paid attention to by the folk who happened to like things the way they were?

What if they pooled their resources and headed off to a part of the world where they could do their thing without any help, or hindrance, from the rest of humankind?

What if, self-isolated for thousands of years in their own little niche, they used those thousands of years pretty much like we’ve used the last decades, centuries, and millennia?

What if they plopped themselves down smack in the middle of a huge continent, a place nobody really even knew about let alone wanted to go to?

With nobody to tell them otherwise it might not have crossed their minds that there were things they ‘couldn’t possibly’ do.

Such a culture wouldn’t have to be necessarily ‘secretive’ – if nobody cares to come looking to see what you might be up to you wouldn’t bother hiding for heaven’s sake. You’d just do what you do.

Their isolation might have lasted for a lot of millennia. Given our own recent advances, try to wrap your mind around what might develop in the course of the next say forty or fifty thousand years. The world in which they lived in had been stable for a hundred thousand years before the glaciers started to retreat and things started changing. The world in which we live in is apparently on the cusp of another change. Let’s hope it isn’t as drastic as that last one.

All the moaning and groaning and hands in the air drama in the world isn’t going to make the least little bit of difference. What’s gonna happen is gonna happen.

Fictionally speaking, back in the day they had teams whose job it was to take care of a lot of the issues of Earth that were of potential concern to humankind. They controlled the ice caps as best they could. They monitored and made adjustments when Earth’s crust became restless. They capped or vented volcanos. But they only did what they had to do when they had to do it. They weren’t all about controlling Earth herself. They also had teams up there in the skies to nudge space objects away from Earth’s orbit and her atmosphere.

Fictionally speaking, one guy’s attempt to nudge an enormous asteroid didn’t quite turn out to be just another day’s work for him. It was more fragile than anticipated and his nudge fractured it instead of redirecting it.

That’s all it took.

Huge chunks and all the rest of the debris from that big rock hit the atmosphere of Earth and exploded from hell to breakfast. Because at the time Earth was lined up just right in the solar system (just like it is now, come to think of it) Jupiter was out of alignment to shield her. But she had those honkin’ big sheets of ice in her northern hemisphere, the one most vulnerable at the time (just like now, come to think of it). They were in retreat but going almighty slow. They offered what protection they could but when those huge chunks of rock ignited the glaciers took the brunt of the hits. Other chunks hit elsewhere as all that debris nailed the hell out of the northern hemisphere and most especially North America. The ice took the biggest whomp but those other pieces of debris were just as lethal.

The poor guy who started the whole thing didn’t have time to feel bad about it. He was incinerated before his brain could form the thought, ‘Oops.’

So Earth had to cope with the consequences and it took a good thousand years for her to stop reeling from that impact.

On the other hand, if that guy hadn’t been up there doing his job, that massive thing could have hit Earth’s atmosphere in one big lump instead of fracturing ahead of time. Poor Earth might have been knocked for a major loop, clear out of her regular orbit. And then what?

‘Impossible’ you say?

Well, I write fiction and don’t really find the word ‘impossible’ all that intimidating.

A New Book Of SONG Is In The Works

Alianora and Drustann are taking us to a place we do not want to go.

They don't want to go there either, to be honest.

Nobody in their right mind would.

You don't want to go there.

Trust me on that.

But you will.

So will I.

COME HELL AND HIGH WATER

Alianora and Drustann of Dunnottar cannot stop what is to happen, but can they help their people get through it?

Earth is visited by Hell and High Water. Our folk are helpless to prevent the horror; their hands are tied by a Law that is Higher than any other. But maybe, just maybe, they can do a little something ... without breaking the Law ...

A civilization is about to be utterly obliterated, a landscape changed beyond recognition in the course of an afternoon, a world confronted by Hell and High Water.

A routine assignment goes awry up there somewhere; humankind will pay a painful price for a very long time - maybe forever.

A thousand years of silence.
A thousand years.
And then what?

Our world is at peace, happy and complacent. Technology and electronics are integrated thoroughly into the life of our world, providing everything we need and then some.

And oh it's a beautiful world, the perfect blending of all things.

We are not masters of our world; we are one with it. After many millenniums we have at long last come to a time of utter serenity.

Our serenity is about to be shattered, our world irrevocably changed.

Hell and High Water are about to descend on us.

And there's nothing we can do about it.

MAMM SPEAKS - JUST THE STORY ...

These are the seven books that contain the STORY part of the Mamm Books.

We had to make more than one book because for this version we went with the LARGE PRINT at the request of some of our readers. Makes for some almighty big books, let me tell you. These are 8 1/2 X 11 inches with a font size of 18. Only a couple of them are over a hundred pages so none of them are going to be bulky despite their larger dimensions. And their covers, as you can see, are simple and color-coded following the rainbow.

I have to admit it seems kind of strange to read the STORY without it being in the context of the Dunnottar Story Line ... without knowing what's right around the corner for Danann and Sidhelagh, and their family, at the end of this STORY ...

Frankly, I've been curious about how they would read when separated, the twined story lines of the Mamm Books.

You can read the 'History' part of it, as these books show, with no problem at all - it's a good STORY standing alone.

Such is not the case with the 'Today' part of the Story Line of the Mamm Books, however.

Again and again and again that Story Line refers back to the 'History' Line. If you don't have the 'History' part, the 'Today' Story Line is not going to read at all well. You aren't going to 'get it' - without knowing the back story upon which the whole is based.

Without the 'History', you won't have any idea what drives our Characters, what motivates them, what inspires them, what makes them entirely unwilling to relinquish what they hold most dear. You won't know what it is that guides them when the times come for them to draw their lines, to take their stands and to hold them against all odds.

You see, the STORY and what it means is an integral part of life for our Characters. They know what past generations of their family had to do in order for them to be able to pick up where those generations left off.

Today I realize that their lineage breeds true and it makes me quite very sentimentally proud to have 'gotten to know' both the Characters of SONG and the current Characters who also stand true to what the 'History' part of SONG is all about.

I tell you true.

Scotland does herself proud in so many ways, every day.

The world watches now, alert and wary, as Scotland takes to herself those on whom the world would turn its back. She is not unwary, believe that. She is plenty alert. That, my friend, is a part of the strength Scotland is showing to us right about now, once again taking the lead. Being alert and wary are, I think, a part of the nature of the Scots - with just cause.

Would it not make her doubters hoot and howl if the guests of Scotland turned against her, tried to do her harm? Yes. The world would shout, 'We told you so, we told you so!' But, should such a thing come to pass it would most likely be quite very short lived.

Even in the Mamm Books such ones came among our Characters. When they proved themselves 'incompatible', they were marched right on out of there in no uncertain terms, and delivered directly to those on whose behalf they had been trying to cause harm to the very people who had given them safety and offered them friendship.

Yes I write fiction, and yes its setting is a very long time ago. The 'bad guys', those who would do harm to others for whatever reasons they want to come up with, might wear different faces and names these days. That doesn't change who and what they are.

Today's 'History' Line isn't really all that different from the 'History' Line of the ancient days, you know.

When an entity threatened the Legacy of Faith, Family, Friends, Freedom, and Future our Characters of SONG were living, protecting, and preserving, said entity made great gains right up until it ran up against the People who would not give up and would not give in. Said People joined forces, pooled their resources, and an Empire bit the dust.

I'm not real sure what 'History' books our today's 'entity', our today's 'bad guys' have been reading, but they might maybe want to reconsider their interpretation of whatever they've been thinking was the outcome of their 'History' books.

At any rate, now I know that yes a 'History' Story Line can stand alone - but a 'Today' Story Line cannot. It is much too entwined with the 'History' Line to be able to stand without it.

We need to be thinking about that some, friends - and giving it some consideration when the time comes for us to have to make a Choice of our own.

You want to know how the STORY ends?

It doesn't.

It isn't going to end.

And the doubting world can watch all it wants, make dire predictions about this, that, and the other thing. Soon it will get bored, because success is never as interesting as conflict - and ain't that just a sad commentary on life in the world in which we live in. Success based on caution, alertness, wariness - built on compassion and a willingness to offer friendship - is quiet, you see.

The rampaging brats get plenty of attention; for every one of those there are many who are quietly going about just being nice.

So, bottom line?

Be careful with your Choices.

Respect the 'History' of the Spiral and the need for balance.

If you're going to stand for something, let it be Peace.

Never EVER lose your Faith that good will come even out of bad.

Allow, nay encourage, the Healing that must come among us.

Know that against all odds it is Hope that will keep us all going.

Accept the fact that Love isn't always peaches and roses. Tough Love is harder to understand but understand it we must.

Above all, realize that Unity must prevail. It will strengthen us more than you think it could. A fragmented People is not a strong People.

That little story about the sticks of kindling is Truth and Wisdom.

You cannot break a bound bundle of kindling regardless of how easily individual sticks might be snapped in two. It doesn't matter if the sticks are of all different kinds of wood. If a stick of balsa is tucked into that bundle it is not going to get broken any more than will the sticks of oak, of pine, of elm, of cottonwood, of ash, of any of the kinds of sticks ... yet unbind them and you can break them at will.

Yep.

And that's it for my bits of wisdom on this day I do believe.

Science and Mythology - WHOA!

As Ullin of Iona is so fond of saying, 'The wheel goes 'round and 'round.'

Then there's this:

And that wheel it just keeps on spinning, doesn't it? The Spiral continues and the PHI symbol has a line through it. You might call it a stringed instrument.

I am not a scientist nor a mathematician nor a physicist nor a computer expert but I can figure out the significance of some interesting lines of thought and investigation that others are working on ... and our Characters are going to be taking us on quite a ride coming up pretty soon here.

Not tonight. Tonight I'm way too tired to begin writing about Mystery and such. I'm going to sleep on it tonight, and let it incubate tomorrow while I see what color chokecherries will dye cotton, and the next day while I put blueberries to good use making some really pretty purple fabric.

In between tending to vats of dyes, some pretty strange Short Stories are liable to surface, mm-hmm. They all fit together but are going to come in random order as my mind goes about sorting and filing things in its very own INFJ/P 'round and 'round way. It's got some very new technical stuff to digest and get integrated into some very ancient mystical stuff.

Watch for the collection of Short Stories; they're going to come out first and will serve two purposes:
1)  tell a few Stories about the Characters we already know, and
2)  lay a bit of a foundation for what's coming up in the next set of books

I'm hoping for a good night's sleep, believe me. The next few days are going to be busier than heck!

Assuming I don't fall off my roof when I go up there to fix what that wind storm did to it the other day.

Whole New Story Line Starting to Incubate!

I'm going to need those short stories and tall tales, and the adventures of the Younglings to keep my balance pretty soon here.

A whole new, but totally related to our Characters, line is beginning to take shape in my head.

It's almost scary, but will be an amazing journey I think.

Back back back we'll go ... and ahead ahead ahead at the same time.

It's that Spiral thing, and something called 'M' which I'm going to snag and call 'Mystery' I think. It's got to do with PHI. And the Orkneys. And Stonehenge. And the Sacred Yew. And of course the Sidhe and Dunnottar.

And that's all I know for the moment.

Tell me something: Do Science and Mystery go together? I think they might. Are we not all seeking Wisdom? Truth? Knowledge?

None of which is here nor there in any practical way, but always always lurking, always here and there. Mostly there, actually.

*sigh*

Yeh. Being as it's after three in the morning and I have a shift to fill not too many hours from now I'm going to go sleep on this and try to let it be for the next four days.

*wry smile*

I said 'try'.

Fourth of July Celebrations

I risk offending a few folks here but am going to go ahead with this anyhow, because it's on my mind and in my heart.

It's just past eleven in the evening of this July 1, 2015. America celebrates her Independence Day in just a couple of days and a couple of hours.

There will be gatherings, and picnics, and fireworks, and Flag waving going on every which way from Tuesday, all of which I happen to love a lot.

I posted photos of some of our Founding Fathers on my Facebook page, and a few of our National icons - the eagle and the Flag, the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty ... people and things that every American ought to be familiar with.

But why is it that I seem to be the only one who is posting this type of thing?

With all the hoop-la about flags these days, our Flag is everywhere - and that's a good thing, don't get me wrong here - but that Flag didn't just happen, folks. It didn't appear out of nowhere, and the Nation it represents didn't just fall down onto the North American continent out of thin air.

While everyone is planning their picnics and fireworks, how many of us are thinking about WHY we're having picnics and fireworks? I mean really thinking about it, not just kind of knowing ...

Back in the day those guys did what they had to do when they had to do it in order for us to - WHAT? Have a picnic? Shoot off fireworks? Yes. Indeed yes. That we are able to do so in safety and freedom would no doubt please them immensely. Other things, probably not so much.

We're reaping the benefits of what they did over 200 years ago.

Do we not get it that their choices clear back then are impacting us TODAY?

Do we not get it that our own choices are going to be impacting the generations who will be living here more than 200 years down the road?

So, as we're eating our steaks or hot dogs, munching on potato salad, and seeing who can spit watermelon seeds the furthest, maybe the thought ought to cross our minds that doing these things, having the safety and freedom to do them, might be something we want for our future generations to be able to enjoy doing too.

We can say, 'Boy, I'm sure glad those guys did what they did way back more than two hundred years ago!'

Two hundred years from now, will Americans be saying those words about us?

Totally Impressed with Stonehaven

PHOTO BY MARGO WILSON FROM MEARNS LEADER ARTICLE BELOW

PHOTO FROM CHOUMAN AND GILMOUR FROM MEARNS LEADER ARTICLE BELOW

No I don't live in Stonehaven and no I've never even visited there except electronically ... but I have to say that I'm thoroughly loving the place!

The staff of their newspaper, the Mearns Leader, do a fantastic job of keeping everyone informed on what's going on, a very fortunate thing for me being as I'm clear across the world.

The links above are the beginning of what might turn out to be a collection of my favorite Stonehaven Stories ... where I can go when I need some serious Spirit-lifting ... I might have to start a whole new blog for them so they don't get lost in my hodgepodge of posts and I can get to them when I need them - which I'm finding to be an increasing need.

And no I can't explain why in the world I'm so fascinated and enchanted by a town so far removed from where I live. Other than its connection to Dunnottar and Dunnottar's connection to the Stories I write down of times long past (and times to come, as those Stories get written), I would have no idea that Stonehaven is one amazing community.

Oh but it is.

You know, a person can learn a lot from reading what talented local reporters write - and even more from reading the comments of local people who care enough about their community to add their input to discussions about topics that matter to them.

I don't mean to poke my nose into their business, and I'm not (quite). I am, however poking my eyes and my ears into their business ... not to mention my heart ... because even from a world away this place has the power to enchant.

The above two articles are a good indication of what I'm finding to love about Stonehaven.

People come up with ideas about how to make an already wonderful place even better, right? Right. And then they share those ideas so that all and sundry can (and do!) have a say about the whole thing.

You know what I'm finding?

I'm finding a community of people who are indeed a real community, ready willing and able to talk to one another about anything and everything under the sun that has to do with them and their home. They use their Voices - and they listen to one another. And good things happen.

They're coming up with solutions. Without compromising their strong roots in the past, they're looking to the future.

So yeah, my sentimental eyes aren't always completely dry as I observe from clear over here.
